Indigenous Cultural Concepts
Indigenous Cultural Concepts is a Diné (Navajo) environmental education and advocacy group in northeastern Arizona that provides hands-on educational events and trainings, including outdoor camping and traditional food practices. Directed by Louise Benally, ICC supports the younger generation with the traditional teachings and tools they need to reconnect with cultural and environmental awareness. ICC has fought extractive industries like coal and uranium, supported teaching around regenerative food harvesting and indigenous food practices, and helped young people understand how environmental and cultural awareness are social justice issues.
ICC joined the Outdoors Empowered Network in 2020 to build a small gear library to support their trainings, cultural programs, and other local partnerships with schools and community groups.
Check out ICC’s video that premiered at this year’s virtual Summit, and Director Louise Benally’s reflection on the impact of including indigenous voices in our work.
